Smoker caught talking politics on train
July 6th, 2007 at 19:13
A smoker was today warned by police after he was caught trying to discuss politics on a train between Paddington and Plymouth. Whilst he wasn’t arrested, he broke a number of social conventions.
Eye witnesses have reported that the smoker, 47, who was later identified as Charles Kennedy, was quietly reading a newspaper, before leaning across the table and asking the man opposite what he thought about Proportional Representation. Though visibly shaken by the communication, the man tried to remain steadfast in his pretending to read his copy of the Metro, and “not hearing” Kennedy’s approaches.
Talking to people on public transport has long been unacceptable in polite circles, with conversation about heavy topics, such as politics and religion thought to be particularly contentious.
A spokesman for the Pipe Smokers Council refused to comment, calling it a “party political matter”.
