[spunge]

Last night I went with Sarah to see [spunge] play at The Charlotte. It wasn’t the first time I’ve seen them, either.
I’d try and review events and describe the atmosphere and the songs that were played, but I can’t actually remember the name of the support band. I remember them being “alright” and sounding a bit generic, and having a thoroughly fake American accent when singing. But that’s all.
[spunge] were good too – they played all the songs you’d expect, opening with Jump on Demand, and fitting in, amongst others, Ego, Skanking Song and their cover of No Woman No Cry, before finishing on fan-favourite Kicking Pigeons. I enjoyed it all immensely apart from one thing.
It turns out that [spunge] are a bunch of massive sell outs.
About half way through their set, they bantered with the audience, singing the praises of Jagermeister. “Okay”, I thought, “maybe they’re just talking about how they like drinking”. But then their on-stage helper cracked open a pack of (what looked like) Jagermeister-branded test-tubes and foam test-tube holder, before pouring Jagermeister in and distributing it to some members of the audience and the band members. Checking their website this morning, it turns out that they’re sponsored by…. surprise, surprise, Jagermeister.
Way to corrupt what punk music is supposed to be about, guys! It’s supposed to be about sticking it to the man with protest music, not shamelessly promoting German liqueurs! To be fair, [spunge] aren’t the sort of band to really care about the ideological backgrounds of their contemporaries – the closest thing they have to meaningful and political lyrics are “This is a skanking song, you can’t go wrong if you skank along“.
So basically, I think I’m probably the one at fault- with my high expectations and their not conforming with my political beliefs. It does worry me that the guitarist has a stick of a Nazi iron-cross with “INDEPENDENCE” written across it on his guitar though.
But yeah, [spunge] were good.
