Recursive Synonyms
March 3rd, 2007 at 00:34
Last night I had the best idea for a new grammatical ‘thing’. I’ve come up with a brilliant idea for a new way of describing certain words, or groups of words. The only trouble is, I can’t think of any examples of the linguistic phenomenon I’ve seemingly invented. So it’s basically like creationism.
Do any “recursive synonyms” exist? In other, er, words: two words that are an exclusive synonym of each other, which can only be described using the synonym? Creating a sort of infinite recursive loop of irritating explanations.
The best, er, “example”, I could come up with was if the word “Mixbination” existed – which could be a synonym for Portmanteau. And likewise, a synonym for “mixbination” could only be “Portmanteau”.
Do any real pairs of words like this exist? Can any of you readers think of any? I want my late night grammar speculation validated, damnit.
