Capdown (again)
December 8th, 2006 at 13:44
Last night I went to see Capdown again. It was the third time I’ve seen them live in less than six months. It was at the same place I went to see [spunge], trivia fans.
Somewhat bizarrely, I managed to get the garage ‘n’ pop loving Sarah to come with me. I didn’t think she’d enjoy it, but I needed someone to go with, so I lied through my teeth about the contents of the music (“Its ska, honest… yeah, even more ska than Madness“).
It was quite an unusual gig: it wasn’t very well publicised (I only discovered it was happening by coincidence), and didn’t seem to be part of a greater tour. And I think I was the only person there in a Capdown t-shirt.
The two support bands were… a bit underwhelming. There weren’t many people there when the first band, Krish came on to the stage, and just a few people (ourselves included) standing around the edge of the dance floor. They tried their best, encouraging the audience to come forward a bit, but didn’t have much luck. Poor Krish.
Before the next act came on, I discovered something surprising. It turns out that Sarah, apart from being black and female, is also Jewish. I think having a black, female, Jewish friend, aside from winning me a lot of points in Political Correctness Bingo, also makes her potentially one of the most potentially discriminated against people in history. If only she was a lesbian too.
Anyway, the next band on were Pink Stripper, who were a more similar to the sort of thing that Capdown does. They were a bit forgettable.
Capdown finally came on… at 11:30pm. And they were excellent, as usual. The set was a bit different to the other two times I’ve seen them: they opened on The Neverlution, one of my favourite songs which I’ve never seen performed live before, and after the first “encore” (they never actually left the stage), they did Bitches & Nike Shoes and Ska Wars, like they’ve always done at the end, before coming back for a second proper encore, and performing Act Your Rage.
One of the slightly more bizarre moments was when a couple of audience members took (some of) their clothes off in exchange for having a song dedicated to them.
Here’s a list of the songs I can remember them playing (largely for my own benefit), in no particular order:
- The Neverlution
- Home is where the start is
- New Revolutionaries
- Strictly Business
- Cousin Cleotis
- MV4
- Bitches and Nike Shoes
- Ska Wars
- Act Your Rage
I really enjoyed it. Excellently, we were right at the front, right in the middle of the stage, and like every gig where I get a good place, I didn’t take my camera.
I’m not sure if Sarah enjoyed it as much as me. She didn’t seem to enjoy being constantly smashed into the barrier in front of us by people in the pit that was behind us. The wimp.
Fingers crossed I’ll be seeing Capdown again in February.
