Images of Mohammed are certainly frowned upon, but if done in a suitably reverential way, there wouldn't be the huge mess that we're currently seeing. In Islamic culture fine art is strictly prohibited, which means the only art that exists there is calligraphy. Because Muhammad is a character in the Koran, which sets this rule, there's no doubt that the Muslims have taken offence because these actions have impeded upon their religion, not because of their association with suicide bombings.
